Nobody likes a pest, and mosquitoes are the worst! Seriously, what purpose do they serve? We live on a lake, and where there is water, there are mosquitoes. We are outside allllllll day long when the sun is shining and into the evening, too, which is when mosquitoes also like to hang out at our campfire. Last year we didn’t take any landscaping measures to keep mosquitoes away, but this year I am being proactive and made planters for the fire pit and also for our porch, where we also spend time in the evening.
These 4 plants will help keep mosquitoes away all summer long! Plant them asap so they are nice and big by the time summer arrives!
Geranium Citronella.
This plant will keep the mosquitoes at bay with it’s lemony scented leaves. Plant them by your entrances, where you grill, and where you like to hang out in the evening to keep the ‘skeeters away. In milder climates this is a perennial. If you live in the colder north, you can bring it inside over winter or plant is as an annual. These plants also grow a pretty pink flower.
Marigolds.
Sold by the flat, marigolds are an inexpensive (and easy to find) choice to add to your mosquito repelling efforts. Marigolds contain Pyrethrum, which is an ingredient found in many repellent sprays, making this natural deterrent environmentally friendly.
Petunias.
Petunias come in a variety of colors, making them easy to add to any color scheme you have going in your container gardens. In addition to mosquitoes, petunias also repel garden bugs, like squash beetles and aphids and can be planted right in the ground, too.
Sage.
While sage itself doesn’t repel mosquitoes, throwing a few leaves into your fire pit will! The incense it burns will ward off mosquitoes in the smoke. (I planted A LOT of sage- let’s hope it does the trick!)
This pot (and it’s matching counterpart) will be placed by our fire pit to do its thing!
Update: I must say, our pots did a FANTASTIC job helping with mosquito control around our fire pit! Mosquitoes don’t bite my husband, but they devour me. I noticed a huge decrease in the number of bites I had after sitting around the fire, which we do almost every weekend. Sadly, I went to bed before The Men one night and they had a massive bonfire…and fried my plants. <not happy> They won’t make that mistake twice. 😉 I will definitely be planting mosquito control pots next year!
