We no longer have a garage, which believe me is a HUGE pain in the rear, because our cottage lot is too small and we would need to purchase the lot across the road to build one. We hope to have a garage again some day, but for now at least we aren’t hoarding a bunch of stuff because everything needs to fit in our shed. 😉 BUT, back when we had a garage I know we had a very bad habit of neglecting it & using it as a dumping ground all winter long. It was just too cold to spend a lot of time keeping it neat and tidy, so by the time spring’s warmer weather arrived it was a real mess!
Over the years we installed a number of shelving units and bought Rubbermaid container upon Rubbermaid container and managed to corral the mess pretty well. We also implemented a few garage organization hacks along the way, too. With the hit new Netflix show “Tidying Up” with Marie Kondo my urge to organize has been sparked. Lucky for me my favorite friend, Pinterest, has been LOADED with organizational ideas to obsess over!
Let’s take a look at some of the awesome garage organization methods I’ve found. After all, the spring thaw is near & you’ll want to organize your garage soon enough!
DIY Garage Organization Solutions
DIY Tool Storage and Folding Workbench
If you are a tinkerer or a handy-gal tool storage is probably a priority for you. You can find the tutorial here. Would you believe the table is a hollow core door? So smart! Doors & pegboard are fairly inexpensive new, but you may score a great deal at your local Habitat for Humanity Restore or on Craigslist.
PVC Tool Storage
If you have leftover PVC from a recent plumbing project, this is a great way to repurpose it into garden tool storage! No more tools falling over and no more wondering where the shovel is.
See the full tutorial and material list at Ashbee Design.
Portable Lumber Rack
We have so. much. lumber. It’s everywhere. This would be perfect for my scraps! I love that you can easily see exactly what sizes you have without rooting around in a huge, slivery pile of scraps.
Rogue Engineering has the plans for this great rack!
Scooter Storage
This DIY storage solution will get so much clutter off the floor- I love it! This is perfect for scooters, skateboards, snowboards, etc. and all of the helmets can hang on pegs, too.
DIY Garage Shelves
Who doesn’t love Ana White? Her DIY skills are amazing and her tutorials are so easy to follow. She’s one of my favorite DIY’ers! Check out these garage shelves. Super easy & will keep everything in its place & off the floor. These are 12′ long, but you can make them to fit your space. I suggest measuring your storage containers so they all fit & there isn’t any wasted space.
Space Saving Storage
This is brilliant- considering how easy it would be to make! Why take up twice as much space storing outdoor equipment you use seasonally? I love this!

Lifting Garage Storage
How cool is this? If you don’t have overhead storage space, you can still make use of the space you have with this lifting garage storage.
Ceiling Mounted Overhead Storage
This ceiling mounted storage is also great! It’s huge, too, at 3′ wide & 8′ long. What a great way to organize seasonal decorations had have them totally out of the way for most of the year.
Magnetic Tool Storage
I kind of feel like there would be no reason my husband couldn’t put the tools away if we had a few of these magnetic tool racks… Not that putting tools in the tool box is difficult, but it really can’t get easier than this!
Sporting Goods Storage
If your family is in to sports odds are good that their equipment has taken over your garage! This equipment organizer is perfect to keep everything contained and off the floor. The best part is the price- at just $30 you can have one for each of your kids!
Utility Hooks
These utility hooks are great! They are perfect for hoses, extension cords and lawn tools that are difficult to hang, like weed whackers. Mounted correctly they can handle up to 40 pounds of weight.
Bicycle Storage
Bikes take up soooo much floor space. This wall mount bike rack can accommodate up to 5 bikes and ends up taking about as much space as one bike on the floor. Perfect for big families!
Home Gym Organization
If your garage doubles as your home gym, it’s probably been awhile since you parked in your garage! This genius workout bench from PRx is exactly what you need. Fold it up when you’re not using it so your car fits in the garage, and fold it down when you need it.
Garage Organization Hacks
Fishing pole organization is on my to-do list, and it has been for almost 3 years now! We have sooo many fishing poles and we only use a handful of them. This pool noodle hack is great and would work perfectly in our shed. We even already have the noodle. 😉

Put Your Walls to Work
They are naturally cubbies- with just a little help with some leftover lumber and bungee cords. Check out Designed to Dwell for more photos. You’ll be surprised by how many items will fit between the studs!
DIY Bag Chair Storage
Bungee cords to the rescue again! What a great way to store bag chairs when they aren’t in your trunk. This keeps them from falling over onto the dirty floor.
Spray Paint Storage
I never would have figured out that gutters are the perfect size to store cans of spray paint! If you have lots of spray paint this is a great way to free up some shelf space.
Overhead Storage Hack
Normally the space above the garage door is completely wasted, but it shouldn’t be! Jay’s Custom Creations shows us exactly how to make the best use of this space by installing shelving around the mechanical door system.
PVC Turned Shoe Storage
This is another great use of PVC. Leave stinky shoes outside in the garage by making a DIY shoe “hive” out of PVC pipe. No more muddy cleats inside the house. Visit Cookie Loves Milk for details.
Are you ready to organize? I feel like a lot of these are perfect for garages, basements and even sheds. Since I have to organize my basement I will be putting a lot of these ideas to use!
