I love nice sheets. I have two requirements: They have to be 100% cotton and they have to be a decent thread count. Why 100% cotton? Because I am hot. Constantly hot. Hot as in I keep the heat at 64 degrees in the winter and my husband wears layers under his fleece sweatshirts. The cotton blend and polyester blend sheets, while they are silky, make for a hot night’s sleep. So 100% cotton it is.
Did you know Pima cotton is the US equivalent of Egyptian cotton? That’s right – Pima (sometimes called Supima) cotton is grown in the US, while Egyptian cotton is grown in…Egypt! When looking for a new sheet set, look for a set made from Pima (or Supima) or Egyptian cotton for the highest quality available.
Two other types of cotton sheets are Muslin, which is often the most inexpensive cotton you can find, but beware- it is very rough. Expect to see thread counts in the 180-200 range. Ouch. Next is Percale cotton, which is typically a cotton/poly blend. While these will wrinkle less and feel very soft, they tend to get “pilly.” For a longer lifespan and a cooler night’s sleep, 100% cotton is a better choice.
Lastly there is “Organic” cotton. Turns out organic cotton sheet sets are not so organic, as chemicals are used to bind the fibers together, meaning there really is no such thing as “organic” sheets.
